About the Artist

Ike Ekland (b. 1969) is a Nuu-chah-nulth carver known for his work in a contemporary, multicultural Nuu-chah-nulth style. Taught by his brother, Arthur Charlie II, Ekland developed a strong foundation in carving by the age of 13.

He is currently working alongside Gordon Dick at his gallery, Ahtsik, where Ekland is reconnecting with his Nuu-chah-nulth heritage through design, compilation, and—most importantly—cultural interpretation. His work reflects a regionally specific approach that fosters and supports Nuu-chah-nulth worldviews through artistic creation.

Ekland also draws much of his inspiration from the various First Nations communities in the Greater Victoria region, where he lived for 35 years.

When he's not carving, Ekland works as a cross-cultural education contractor along the west coast of Vancouver Island, collaborating closely with many Nuu-chah-nulth nations.
